Discord server backup bot: snapshot, preview and restore safely

A compromised admin or a bad bot can wipe months of setup in seconds. With the BotGG Discord server backup bot you keep snapshots of your roles, channels and permission overwrites, see exactly what a restore would change before it runs, and bring the structure back step by step.

What you get

Full structure snapshot

Roles with colors and permissions, categories, text, voice, announcement, stage, forum and media channels, topics, slowmode, permission overwrites, server settings and the emoji list.

BotGG settings included

Optionally save the configuration of every BotGG feature on the server. On restore, old role and channel IDs are remapped to the restored ones.

Dry run before anything changes

Every restore starts with a preview: what will be created (+), updated (~) or deleted (−), and what will be skipped and why. Nothing happens until you confirm.

Three restore modes

Add missing only recreates what’s gone. Sync also updates existing roles and channels. Full restore also deletes what the backup doesn’t have — after an automatic safety backup.

Resumable restore jobs

Restores run as a job with live progress, a Stop button and a final report. If the bot restarts mid-restore, the job continues where it left off.

Export, import, template

Download any backup as a JSON file and import it in the console — to restore it later or to set up another server with the same structure.

How it works

  1. Enable Backups in the console

Open https://console.botgg.app, choose your server and switch on Backups. The console shows what BotGG can and can’t restore with its current permissions.

  2. Take a backup

Click Create in the console or run /backup create in Discord. Choose whether to include BotGG settings and, optionally, an archive of recent messages from selected channels.

  3. Schedule it

On Pro, turn on scheduled backups — daily or weekly at a chosen hour in your server time zone — and decide how many to keep. Older scheduled backups rotate out.

  4. Preview and restore

Pick a backup and a mode, review the dry run, and start the restore. Only the server owner or an Administrator can start it; a full restore also asks you to type the server name.

Restore modes of the Discord backup bot, explained

The restore planner compares the backup with your live server and matches roles and channels by ID (same server, survives renames) or by name and type. What it does next depends on the mode you choose:

  • Add missing — creates roles and channels that are missing by name and type, and adds or fixes permission overwrites. Never edits or deletes anything.
  • Sync — everything in Add missing, plus updates existing roles, channels, overwrites and server settings to match the backup and restores the order. Nothing is deleted.
  • Full restore — everything in Sync, plus deletes roles and channels that aren’t in the backup. BotGG takes a safety backup of the current state first, and you confirm by typing the server name.

What a Discord backup bot can and can’t bring back

Discord puts hard limits on bots, and BotGG is upfront about them. A backup never restores messages (the optional archive is a read-only reference), members, their roles, bans, webhooks, invites or integrations, and role icon images. Roles at or above the bot’s highest role are skipped and reported, and the bot never grants a permission it doesn’t have itself.

BotGG’s invite link doesn’t ask for Administrator, Manage Server or Manage Expressions. Without them, server settings and emojis are listed as skipped — their details stay in the backup. Grant those permissions before a restore if you want them back. Combine Backups with Moderation, Logs and Verification to keep raids and nukes from happening in the first place.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up my Discord server?

Enable Backups in the BotGG console and click Create, or run /backup create in Discord (Manage Server needed). The backup stores your roles, channels, permission overwrites, server settings, emoji list and, optionally, BotGG’s own settings.

Can I restore my Discord server after it was nuked?

Yes — that’s what Backups is for. Run /backup restore or use the Restore wizard in the console, review the dry run and start the restore. Deleted roles and channels are recreated and permission overwrites are fixed. Messages and members can’t be restored by any bot.

Can I copy a Discord server to another server?

Yes. Export a backup as JSON, import it in the console of the other server and restore it there. Roles, channels and overwrites are recreated; member-specific overwrites are only kept when restoring onto the same server.

Are automatic backups available?

Scheduled backups — daily or weekly at a chosen hour — are part of Pro. How many backups a server can store also depends on the plan.

Who can restore a backup?

Anyone with Manage Server can create, download and preview backups, but only the server owner or a member with Administrator can start a restore. The bot checks this again when the job actually runs.

Ready to level up your server?

Add BotGG for free, then switch features on in the web console.
