A Carl-bot alternative for reaction roles, AutoMod and logging

Carl-bot is widely known for reaction roles, automod and logging. If you’re considering a Carl-bot alternative, BotGG covers those three jobs with Role menus, Moderation and Logs — configured with visual builders in the web console instead of long command chains.

What a Carl-bot alternative needs to cover

Servers that rely on a bot like Carl-bot usually lean on three things: members picking their own roles from a message, automatic filtering of spam and unwanted content, and a clear log of what changed on the server and who did it. A good alternative has to handle all three without making staff relearn everything.

In BotGG those are three separate modules you enable independently. Each has its own page in the console with live previews, so you see the message members will get before it’s posted.

Role menus: reaction roles, buttons and select menus

Role menus are messages BotGG posts and keeps in sync. Each menu has its own embed and one of three styles: buttons (label, emoji and color per role), a select menu (with min/max picks) or classic reactions. Modes decide how picks behave:

  • Normal — click to add, click again to remove.
  • Unique — only one role from the menu at a time (great for colors or regions).
  • Verify — add only; Drop — remove only.
  • Requirements — required or blocked roles, a maximum number of roles, or a minimum level.

AutoMod, moderation cases and server logs

Moderation includes AutoMod rules for spam, duplicates, mass mentions, caps, invites, links (allow- or deny-list), bad words with wildcards, zalgo, attachment floods and new accounts. Each rule can delete, warn or time out, with exempt roles and channels. Commands like /warn, /timeout, /ban, /purge and /lockdown create numbered cases you can review with /case and /modlog, and warnings can escalate automatically.

Logs post compact entries per category — messages, members, voice, channels and roles, server changes and moderation — each to its own channel, with ignore lists. Invites & Rewards tracks who invited whom (/invites stats, /invites leaderboard) and pays coins, XP and roles for verified invites. For a walkthrough, see the AutoMod setup guide.

How to switch to BotGG

  1. Invite BotGG

Add BotGG with the invite link and place its role above every role it should hand out or moderate.

  2. Rebuild menus, rules and log channels

In the console, recreate each role menu, set up AutoMod rules and exemptions, and pick a channel for each log category.

  3. Test side by side

Post new menus in a staff channel first and try them with a test account. Point logs at new channels so you can compare output before switching.

  4. Replace the old menus

Post BotGG’s role menus where members expect them and delete the old messages so nobody clicks a menu that no longer works.

  5. Turn off the old modules

Disable automod and logging in the old bot for anything BotGG now handles, so messages aren’t deleted or logged twice.

Frequently asked questions

Is BotGG a good Carl-bot alternative?

If your main needs are reaction roles, AutoMod and server logs, BotGG covers those use cases with Role menus, Moderation and Logs. Try them in a staff channel before switching.

Can BotGG take over my existing reaction-role messages?

No. BotGG posts and manages its own menu messages. Recreate the menus in the console, post them, then delete the old ones.

Do I need to type commands to build a role menu?

No. Menus are built in the console with role pickers, an embed builder and a live preview. /rolemenu send is there if you want to post one from Discord.

Do BotGG logs include moderation actions?

Yes, when Moderation is enabled too: the moderation log category mirrors cases, AutoMod hits and raid alerts.

Is BotGG affiliated with Carl-bot?

No. BotGG is an independent bot. Carl-bot is mentioned here only to describe a common use case.

Carl-bot is a trademark of its respective owner. BotGG is an independent product and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Carl-bot. We only describe BotGG’s own capabilities; check the official website of Carl-bot for its current features and terms.
