How to build a Discord server economy (currency, earning, spending)

Set up a server currency, give members fair ways to earn it, spend it in a role shop and on giveaway entries, and keep inflation in check.

A Discord server economy gives members a reason to show up tomorrow: they earn a currency by being active, and spend it on things they actually want, like a name color, a timed VIP role or a ticket into a giveaway. This guide walks you through building one with BotGG’s Bank, Shop and Giveaways, and, just as important, how to keep it from inflating into meaningless numbers.

What you need before you start

  • BotGG in your server (invite it here) and access to the web console with Manage Server.
  • A rough idea of what members should be able to buy. Roles are the classic reward, so create the roles first (including any color roles). BotGG never creates roles for the shop, it only hands out roles you made.
  • BotGG’s own role placed above every role it should give out. Discord doesn’t let a bot assign a role higher than its own.

Everything works on the Free plan. The number of shop items and running giveaways depends on your plan, see pricing for the exact limits.

Step 1: Create the currency (Bank)

In the console, open your server, go to Bank in the sidebar, enable it and open the Settings tab.

  1. Currency: set a name, a plural and an emoji, for example 🪙 Coin / Coins or 💎 Gem / Gems. The live preview shows how balances will look in Discord.
  2. Starting balance: what every member begins with. Zero is fine; a small amount (enough for one cheap item) helps newcomers try the shop.
  3. Banker roles: members with these roles (plus anyone with Manage Server) can add, remove and set balances. Give it to trusted staff only.
  4. Negative balances: leave off unless you run a debt mechanic on purpose.
  5. Log channel: pick a staff channel. Every admin adjustment gets posted there, which makes mistakes easy to spot.

Save with the bar at the bottom. Members can now use /balance to see their card and rank, and /bank leaderboard for the top balances.

Step 2: Decide how members earn

A healthy economy has a few predictable income sources rather than one big faucet. BotGG gives you these:

Income sourceWhere to set itGood for
/daily claim with a streak bonusBank → Settings → DailyBringing people back every day
Coins per level-up, plus a milestone bonusBank → Settings → Rewards (needs Levels)Rewarding real activity in chat and voice
Manual rewards with /bank addDiscord or Bank → AccountsEvents, contests, helping others
Transfers with /payBank → Settings → TransfersA player-to-player market

Daily rewards. Turn on Daily, set the amount, the streak bonus per consecutive day and the streak cap. With 100 coins and a +10 bonus capped at 7 days, a loyal member earns 100 on day one, 110 on day two, and tops out at 170 from day eight on. The day resets on your server’s time zone.

Level-up coins. If you use the leveling system, set coins per level and a milestone bonus. Every level-up then pays automatically, and the payment shows in the ledger with the level as the reason.

Event rewards. /bank add target:@Winner amount:500 reason:Tournament win pays one member. The target can also be a role: /bank add target:@Event Team amount:200 shows a confirmation with the member count, then pays everyone in it. /bank remove and /bank set work the same way.

Transfers. /pay member:@friend amount:250 lets members trade. You can add a fee percentage (a quiet currency sink), a minimum amount, a daily limit per member and a confirmation step above a certain amount.

Step 3: Give the currency something to buy (Shop)

Enable Shop in the console (the Bank must be on, prices use its currency) and open the Items tab. Create items with the item editor:

  • Role: gives a role permanently or for a set time. Buying a timed role again extends it. When the time runs out, BotGG removes the role on its own.
  • Color: a pre-created color role. With exclusive colors on (Settings tab), buying a new color removes the member’s previous shop color.
  • Custom item: an inventory entry. Mark it consumable so members can /use it (optionally granting a role for a while), or turn on staff fulfilment for things a human has to deliver, like a custom emoji slot or a game key. Each purchase then posts a request with a Done button in your fulfilment channel and appears in the Fulfilment tab.

Every item can have a price, category, stock, a per-member limit, required roles and a minimum Levels level. Hidden items don’t appear in /shop but can be bought by typing their exact name in /buy, which is handy for secret or event-only rewards.

Members browse with /shop, buy with /buy, check what they own with /inventory and use consumables with /use. Every purchase shows a confirmation with the price and the balance after it. If Discord refuses to give the role (for example, because someone moved BotGG’s role), the purchase is refunded automatically.

Step 4: Add giveaways with an entry cost

Paid giveaway entries are one of the best currency sinks: members burn coins for a chance at something rare. In Giveaways, create a giveaway in the editor and set an entry cost under requirements, or start one in Discord with /giveaway start entry_cost:100. Members confirm the price before entering. If they leave the giveaway, or you cancel it, the entry is refunded. You can combine the cost with required roles, a minimum level or account age, and bonus entries for roles such as boosters.

A quick way to price items: estimate how much an active member earns per week, then price your best permanent reward at several weeks of income and timed roles at a few days.

Keeping the economy balanced

Inflation happens when coins enter faster than they leave. Watch the Dashboard tab in the Bank (total supply, volume per day, top balances) and the Stats tab in the Shop (revenue, buyers, top items).

  • Add sinks, not just faucets. Timed roles, consumables, transfer fees and paid giveaway entries all remove currency. Permanent roles only remove it once.
  • Use limited stock for prestige items. Scarcity keeps high prices meaningful.
  • Adjust gradually. Cutting the daily reward in half overnight feels like a punishment; small tweaks and new items feel like a live game.
  • Audit big jumps. The Ledger tab filters by member, type and date, and exports to CSV. A member who suddenly receives dozens of transfers is worth a look.

Common mistakes and troubleshooting

  • "The bot can’t give this role." Move BotGG’s role above the shop roles in Server Settings → Roles. The item editor warns you about hierarchy problems.
  • /daily says it’s disabled. Daily is off by default. Turn it on under Bank → Settings.
  • The shop says the Bank is disabled. The Shop and giveaway entry costs need the Bank feature enabled.
  • Level-ups pay nothing. Set coins per level in the Bank settings, and make sure both Levels and Bank are enabled.
  • A member can’t buy an item. Check stock, per-member limit, required roles and minimum level. The member sees the reason in the reply.
  • Too many people have too much money. Add a sink (an expensive timed role, a paid giveaway) before you take anything away.

FAQ

Can members lose coins?

Only through spending, transfer fees, or a banker using /bank remove, /bank set or /bank reset. Every change is recorded in the ledger with the actor and the reason.

Can I reset the whole economy?

You can reset individual members with /bank reset, which puts them back to the starting balance after a confirmation. For a full-season restart, announce it first so members can spend what they have.

Do shop roles expire when the bot is offline?

Timed roles are stored in the database. When BotGG is back, it removes every role whose time has passed.

Is a Discord economy bot free?

Bank, Shop and Giveaways are all available on the Free plan; Pro raises the item and giveaway limits. Compare plans on the pricing page and see every command on the commands page.

Ready to level up your server?

Add BotGG for free, then switch features on in the web console.
